TankDepot.co.uk Welcomes ERA Ratings Scheme
11th May 2010
Online oil storage tank specialist TankDepot.co.uk has given a warm welcome to a new OFTEC led consumer initiative, which now allows consumers to compare and to contrast the environmental benefits of different types of tanks.
The Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) Scheme builds upon successful eco-labelling initiatives in other industries. ERA was officially launched by Northern Ireland's Environment Minister, Edwin Poots MLA and debuted recently at FPS EXPO in Harrogate. ERA rates new oil tanks according to their environmental features on a scale from 1 to 10; the lower the number, the lower the risk.
A tank with an ERA Rating of 1 will be fully bunded, and will incorporate the latest anti-pollution safeguards. By contrast, an oil storage installation, incorporating a tank with an ERA Rating of 10 will represent a much higher risk of a pollution incident arising. The risk will be heightened if the tank has not been installed according to OFTEC and manufacturer instructions.
Leading oil storage tank manufacturers including Harlequin and Kingspan have already committed to the scheme. New tanks manufactured by both manufacturers now visibly display an ERA Rating and it is expected that other British storage tank manufacturers will soon follow Harlequin and Kingspan's lead.
TankDepot.co.uk's Philip Breek says, "Working closely with other industry stakeholders, TankDepot.co.uk has taken the lead in minimising the impact of fuel oil upon the environment. Earlier this year, TankDepot.co.uk became the first national oil tank reseller to delist, high risk single skin oil tanks and instead specialise solely in the supply of environmentally preferred, bunded oil tanks.
"As an environmentally responsible supplier, we warmly welcome this voluntary, industry led initiative. We will be working closely with leading oil tank manufacturers to incorporate ERA Ratings on to the TankDepot.co.uk website."
