Home Destroyed in Co. Down Oil Tank Blaze

10th July 2010

A home has been destroyed in Newtownards, Co. Down after a traditional 12th. July bonfire partially ignited early yesterday morning, setting light to a fence, a car and two domestic oil tanks in the East Mount area of the town.

Two other homes were damaged in the incident and according to BBC News, the quick actions of firefighters saved two other homes from being damaged. There were no reports of any serious injuries, however according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, one firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

OilFiredUp.com understands the affected oil tanks were non-compliant with current Building Regulations in Northern Ireland and did not comply with the oil tank fire protection requirements contained within British Standard BS5410 and OFTEC Technical Instruction Book 3.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph Newspaper, local DUP MLA Jonathan Bell said, "The fire service need to be praised because of their actions, or we could have been dealing with even more damage than the disaster that there has been."
