EA appeals for witnesses to Welsh pollution incident
23rd March 2004
Environment Agency Wales are appealing for any information which may assist in identifying the individuals who are responsible for polluting the Nant Heulyn stream, Bangor. A container, which leaked a large amount of diesel oil on Monday 15 March 2004, caused serious contamination of the stream and adjoining land. The Agency has acted swiftly to contain the pollution.
An Agency spokesperson said: “Our actions to date have prevented a major environmental impact on the sensitive ecosytem of the stream, the marina at Y Felinheli and the Menai Strait. The resources required to address this issue have been considerable, and we will be seeking to reclaim any costs if and when those responsible are found.”
EA Wales urges anyone who witnessed this incident or knows anything about a possible source of the waste oil to contact Environment Agency Wales’s emergency hotline on 0800 80 70 60. All calls will be treated in strict confidence. The freephone number operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
