Is your oil heating system due an MOT?

7th August 2004

Whilst the sun may not be splitting the stones, it’s all too easy to forget that the Autumn and Winter months are only a matter of weeks away.

However, according to The Oil Firing Technical Association for the Petroleum Industry (OFTEC), domestic oil storage tanks should be inspected by an OFTEC Registered Technician (or similarly competent person) at least annually… when was the last time your tank was inspected? If its more than a year ago, then its best to call out your nearest Technician and arrange for them to call out and ‘MOT’ your tank!

When stored responsibly, oil is an extremely efficient, safe and environmentally responsible fuel choice. But don’t forget, that the uncontrolled discharge of oil – whether deliberate or accidental – is a criminal offence, punishable by heavy fines. Even the smallest of spills can lead to an impromptu appearance before the local Magistrate. Aside from the fines, there is the inconvenience, remediation costs and legal expenses that are so very often an integral part of any pollution incident. According to environmental authorities, it’s estimated that there are about 20 oil related pollution incidents every day in the United Kingdom… which quite simply is 20 too many!

And when your OFTEC Technician is giving your tank the once over… why not ask them to give your boiler the once over? From tanks to timers, filters to firevalves, today’s oil heating equipment is precision engineered to provide unsurpassed comfort, convenience and warmth. But just like any quality equipment, regular maintenance is essential to keep everything running in tip, top, shipshape condition!

From Thurso to Tipperary, Londonderry to Lincoln, St. Mawgan to St. Peter Port… there are literally thousands of Technicians registered with The Oil Firing Technical Association for the Petroleum Industry (OFTEC)… everyone of whom is:

 Individually trained at an OFTEC Approved Training Centre, and their skills independently assessed before they can apply for OFTEC Registration

 Inspected periodically by an OFTEC Inspector

 Re-assessed every five years to maintain their Registration

 Carries an identity card confirming the type of oil heating work for which they are registered

 Holds appropriate insurance to work in your home

 Able (in England and Wales) to self-certify work for which they are Registered. This saves you time and money, as non-Registered technicians must, by law, notify Local Authority Building Control, or submit plans when installing oil-fired appliances

 Prepared to leave with you a written statement of the work they have done on your appliance, replacement parts fitted and recommendations for work needed in the future.

So to ensure that you and your family remain as ‘snug as a bug in a rug’ over the Autumn and Winter months, be sure to choose wisely and choose an OFTEC Registered Technician. For details of you nearest OFTEC Registered Technician, click the link below: Bookmark and Share
