EA acts to minimise damage from Worthing oil spill
9th August 2004
The Environment Agency has been urgently working to minimise any damage caused by an oil leak in Worthing today whilst trying to investigate a possible source.
The Environment Agency received a report of a spillage close to the A27 which was eventually located at Warren Road, Worthing. Over 6,000 litres of oil had already been lost into the ground which is situated in what is called a Source Protection Zone 1. This is the highest classification in areas where point sources of groundwater need the greatest protection against pollution. The leak is currently 400 metres from the potable abstraction point for Worthing.
The Agency worked quickly to inform Southern Water and Environment Agency Officers have been on site today advising on the safe handling and disposal of contaminated waste and investigating the source of the leak and any possible groundwater offences.
