DEFRA launches Bio Energy Grants Initiative

19th November 2004

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is currently offering grants to farmers, foresters and businesses to help develop the supply chain required to harvest, store, process and supply energy crops and wood fuel to end-users.

The eligible biomass crops include: short rotation coppice, Miscanthus, woodfuel, straw and a variety of grasses. Funding is available for the costs of setting up producer groups, training and for capital items, such as specialist equipment, storage and hard-standing.

A total of £3.5 million is available UK wide with a maximum grant of £200,000 per producer or business. Grants must be allocated within three years of the start of the scheme. The deadline for grant applications is 14 February 2005. For more information and to download an application form, click the DEFRA link at the end of this article.

To find out more about wood fuel heating, the Centre for Alternative Technology is running two new courses in 2005. For the domestic and commercial user there’s Heating with Wood Fuel – Small Scale application, which runs from 7th – 11th February 2005. If you’re interested in the design and installation of wood heating systems, there’s a Heating with Wood Fuel course running from 31st October – 4th November 2005.
