Ffordd Newydd O Fyw is an exciting new project, following five households across Wales as they attempt to change their lifestyles. They are trying to lessen their impact on the environment and save money. Experts measure their success, and the group that has achieved the biggest change will win a special prize.
"Ffordd Newydd o Fyw" uses new system to measure environmental impact, that"s been designed by the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth. By gathering detailed information about the way of life of the people who take part in the project the Centre can use a computer program to work out the "carbon footprint" of every individual and group.
The data gathered by the researchers includes:
· How many miles each person travels every year
· Where does their food come from
· How much are their average electricity and gas bills
The carbon measure estimates how many tons of carbon dioxide are emitted by each person"s activities during the year. In Wales the average is close to 10 tons a year. In order to get it down to a level that the atmosphere can cope with, the each individual’s figure needs to be reduced to 2 tons of CO2 a year.
Even the "greenest" of the groups in the "Ffordd Newydd o Fyw" project needs to halve their carbon footprint in order to reach the target set by the Centre for Alternative Technology. To follow the progress of the five households, log onto
