EST launch free energy efficiency guide for homes

30th November 2004

Energy Efficiency: The Guide, is an online toolkit designed to provide housing professionals in the public and private sectors with information to develop and implement energy efficiency strategies.

It has been developed in response to new research which reveals that 60 per cent of local authorities have not yet set targets for reducing emissions from their housing stock.

The guide promotes and supports improvements in the energy efficiency of managed housing, with a view to reducing both carbon dioxide emissions and fuel poverty, by providing up-to-date guidance on energy efficiency techniques, as well as detailed information on sources of funding assistance.

Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive, EST, said: “Managed housing constitutes a third of the housing stock within the UK and energy used in this sector produces over 48 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, while around one in ten tenants are in fuel poverty.

“It is clear that the managed housing sector - private landlords and public sector housing professionals alike - has an important role to play in achieving the Government’s targets of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2010.

“The good news is that while there remains scope for improvement, we are seeing increasing awareness of the need to improve energy efficiency to address climate change.  Energy Efficiency: The Guide is designed as a practical resource to furnish housing professionals with the knowledge required to translate this awareness into action.”
