Search begins for FPS-OAMPS Driver of the Year
15th December 2004
With less than five months to go till the key event in the oil distribution industry"s calendar, FPS 2005, the hunt is on to find "The FPS-OAMPS Driver of the Year 2005". This annual competition sets out to find the driver who has gone the "extra mile" for their customers or who has done something way beyond their normal duties.
This prestigious award is aimed at drivers who have been employed by the nominating company since 1st January 2004. Only companies who are members of the FPS may submit nominations and the competition is limited to one entry per depot. What"s more, the nominated driver must have had an incident free year (no accidents or spillages) in 2004.
Applications for the award can be sent to the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) after 31 December 2004 so if you have a driver who has gone that "extra mile", download the application form at www.fpsshow.co.uk and start preparing your entry now.
Once all applications are received the FPS judges will visit and interview a number of nominated drivers before shortlisting the final three. The finalists will then be invited to attend the FPS 2005 Dinner on 21 April in Telford, where the winner will be announced.
Last year"s winner Bobby Gardiner of Cawoods Oil, Belfast was the first ever winner of this prestigious industry award from Northern Ireland. Runners up were Joe O"Donoghue of Breffni Oil Distributors Ltd and Clifford Tappin of British Benzol PLC.
Impressed by Bobby"s long track record of outstanding customer care and service, obvious dedication to his job and, in particular, by the strong rapport that he has established with customers and colleagues alike during his career, the judges voted Bobby the overall winner and awarded him the prestigious winners glass trophy and a £1000 first prize. Both Joe and Clifford received runners up glass trophies and £250 each.
An event that impressed the judges about Bobby Gardiner was an incident where an elderly customer ran out of home heating oil late one evening and sent out an urgent call. Unfortunately, Bobby had no oil left in his tanker but undeterred he called round to the lady"s home, managed to prop up her oil tank so that the small amount of oil left in the tank would provide her with just enough central heating for that night. And, by 8am the following morning had returned to make a full oil delivery.
Vanessa Cook, Marketing & Events Manager for the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS), and organiser of the FPS 2005 Exhibition and Conference comments: "Last year’s awards were a tremendous success. So good were the number of nominations received that selecting just three finalists was no easy task! This year, we hope to have even more entries and there is plenty of time to get those nominations in before the closing date at the end of February 2005."
David Barrett, of award sponsors OAMPS Limited comments: "If the standard of last year’s entries was anything to go by, the judges are going to have a hard task to decide on the winner for this year"s awards. These awards recognise the high standards being set by drivers in the UK and Ireland and we hope the awards will continue to encourage oil distributors to promote an ethos of safe driving, cleaner deliveries and outstanding customer care to create more drivers capable of winning this award."
