ICOM highlights importance of Good Water Treatment
28th October 2008
A new guide, identifying the importance of water treatment for industrial shell boiler systems, has recently been produced by industry body ICOM Energy Association - the trade association representing the UK's commercial and industrial heating industry.
The guide contains essential information for boiler operators and maintenance supervisors to assist them in keeping their boiler systems at optimum efficiency, minimising their fuel consumption and avoiding expensive boiler failures.
Available free as a download from www.icomenergyassociation.org.uk , the 'Treatment of Water for Shell Boilers' explains in detail the problems and causes of scale, corrosion and foaming, how to spot them and what to do to resolve the situation for both hot water and coil boiler systems. The new guidance contains a section on steam generators and usefully, also looks in detail at multi-boiler installations.
The merits of the full range of raw water pre-treatments are all reviewed, from reverse osmosis through to simple base exchange, water softeners.
Boiler failures can occur, creating considerable repair, replacement and even collateral damage costs when the failure is catastrophic - and all the common causes are down to a lack of maintenance and water treatment. Sludge accumulation affecting control systems, perforation of the smoke tubes through corrosion and overheating due to the build up of excess scale or other deposits are the most common causes or boiler failure, and all are avoidable through correct chemical water treatment.
