OFTEC issues Works Notification Reminder

26th November 2008

OFTEC is reminding oil heating, cooking and storage technicians that legally they must notify their work - either with building control or via OFTEC's works notification system for registered technicians.

Installers who choose to use the Building Control route need to contact their local authority building control department to arrange for the job to be inspected. If the inspection passes, the local authority will issue a certificate of compliance to the householder. OFTEC claim that inspections can cost anywhere between £100 - £200.

Alternatively, because OFTEC registered technicians in England and Wales can self certify their work there is no need for building control to inspect every job. Instead, they can notify work for just £2.50+vat per job using OFTEC's online works notification system. Job details can easily be keyed in online, and OFTEC will notify the local authority who will issue a certificate of compliance to the householder.

Using the OFTEC system is a benefit of registration, and OFTEC claims that it is cheaper than going the building control route, as well as being much less hassle.

More and more customers are aware that they will need compliance certificates as part of their home information packs for when they sell their home. So rather than customers chasing up certificates at a later date, OFTEC points out that it makes sense to notify work up front and comply with the law, either using OFTEC's web based system, or by contacting Building Control directly.
