Building Control welcomes OFTEC Passport Initiative

17th September 2009

Northern Ireland Building Control has given a warm welcome to the ‘Boiler Passport’ initiative, devised by The Oil Firing Technical Association in Northern Ireland in partnership with leading boiler manufacturers.

The Boiler Passport has been prepared in consultation with OFTEC, the leading trade body for the Oil Heating and Cooking Industry throughout the UK. It is designed to provide a means by which consumers will receive a properly installed and commissioned appliance that meets current Building Regulations in Northern Ireland.

Trevor Martin, Head of Belfast Building Control said, “Commissioning of the appliance is a requirement under current building regulations. To link the commissioning to future warranty is a positive step towards ensuring compliant systems are installed throughout the Province. This will have obvious benefits to householders including better energy efficiency, fuel savings and increased reliability”.

“The passport will be on the Agenda at the Northern Ireland Annual Building Control Conference to be held in the Hilton Hotel, Belfast on 12th and 13th November 2009”, added Trevor.

Boiler passports will be available in all new boilers supplied by Firebird, Grant, Turkington and Warmflow from 1st September 2009 and these manufacturers will require the completion of the boiler passport and return of the commissioning certificate before a warranty is issued.

“Any failure to install the boiler correctly and non-completion of the boiler passport may invalidate the manufacturers’ warranty” added David.
