Marks & Spencer launches Home Energy Services Division

16th February 2010

Leading British retailer Marks & Spencer has announced it is launching a new Home Energy Service Division that will offer customers a suite of energy efficiency products and services.

Building on the success of M&S Energy, which launched just over a year ago and is already servicing over 125,000 homes, M&S will roll-out a number of new products including bespoke energy advice, renewable energy solutions such as solar panels & heat pumps, and energy efficient heating solutions over the coming months.

The first new service, M&S Energy Home Insulation, launches this week, with prices starting from £149 for loft insulation and the same price for cavity wall insulation. Insulation makes homes more energy efficient and reduces carbon dioxide emissions - which it is alleged is one of the biggest causes of climate change.

To kick-start the drive to encourage home insulation, M&S is offering free loft or cavity wall insulation to all its employees as part of its ongoing Plan A environmental commitment. The company will also pay the benefit in kind (BIK) tax to encourage employees to take-part.

If all qualifying employees were to take up the offer, M&S will insulate over 30,000 homes for free. This would lead to an annual saving of around 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Richard Gillies, Director of Marks & Spencer's Plan A, says "We hope to create 30,000 green M&S Ambassadors by offering this energy efficient solution free of charge to our employees. It will produce a significant cut in their carbon emissions, cut their energy bills and, we believe, inspire them to become advocates for energy efficiency."

Stephen Langford, Head of M&S Energy, says: "Marks & Spencer is committed to making it easy and cost effective for our customers and employees to reduce their carbon footprint. Insulating your home saves you money and helps in the fight against climate change, a genuine win-win situation. We've launched a service that takes the hassle factor out of home insulation and applies M&S standards of quality, value and customer service.

"We will select the best installers, deliver the best lead times and customers will pay M&S, not the installer. It will also be a bespoke service and customers will deal with an M&S Advisor that will manage the whole journey from enquiry through to installation."
