No way Jose! OilFiredUp.com apologises to the European Commission.

20th February 2010

Yesterday on Twitter, OilFiredUp.com tweeted a link to an article in the Daily Mail, which reported difficulties that some British consumers are experiencing with their oil fired cookers. According to the Daily Mail, at least some of these difficulties can be attributed to a fuel specification change as a result of a ruling by European Union bureaucrats.

Our tweet simply said, 'Got a problem with you Aga? Freephone 00800 6789 1011 and ask for Jose Manuel Barroso'. We also provided a direct link to the Daily Mail article.

Our little tweet was tongue in cheek. However, a small number of people seem to have thought that we were advertising a helpline for people experiencing difficulties with their oil fired cooker. One person also thought that Jose might have been a plumber.

The telephone number we cited is actually the telephone number for the European Commission based in Brussels. And Jose Manuel Barosso is not a plumber, but President of the European Commission. However, its quite understandable if you've never heard of Jose. Unless you live in Portugal - you'll probably never have been afforded the opportunity to vote for him.

So needless to say, if you've a problem with your oil fired cooker, the European Commission cannot help you. Nor can Jose. Instead, we recommend you contact a competent professional, such as a suitably qualified technician, registered with OFTEC - The Oil Firing Technical Association.

For anyone who did mistake the telephone number we provided as a genuine technical helpline for oil fired appliances, or perhaps thought that Jose was a plumber - we apologise unreservedly and sincerely. We also apologise if we accidentally caused any inconvenience to the European Commission or to Mr. Barroso. Ordinarily, when we inconvenience European institutions and Brussels bureaucrats, it is quite deliberate.
