National Energy Action responds to Government's Home Energy Strategy
2nd March 2010
The Government has today published a strategy for a green transformation of Britain's homes which it aims to rollout over the next decade. Speaking in response to the publication, the Government's Home Energy Management Strategy, Jenny Saunders Chief Executive of National Energy Action said, "NEA is pleased to see the publication of the Government's Warm Homes, Greener Homes document today. The document sets out how the government plans to help householders save energy and have warmer, more comfortable homes.
"Throughout the document we see that the Government intentions are clear for a scaled up delivery of energy efficiency to homes, with a particular focus on action through local authorities. NEA welcomes this, and the assistance it should provide for vulnerable households through free 'eco-upgrades' from the energy suppliers.
Ms Saunders added, "By delivering more effectively through local authority partnerships (which NEA has been calling for) the government is placing local leadership at the centre of their plans. The Warm Zones which are run on a not-for-profit basis by NEA have demonstrated the efficiencies that will come from this type of local-led, community focused approach to improving the homes of those most in need. It is essential to engage everyone and to ensure coherent planning to enable the delivery of the ambitions in this strategy.
"A more rigorous obligation on energy companies with penalties for non-compliance will ensure they deliver the measures set out in the document through partnerships with local authorities.
"We will expect the Government to continue to map progress in delivering its fuel poverty strategy to meet the eradication date of 2016 through this strategy and local authority reporting mechanisms. We await the government to provide more detail on how this strategy will contribute to the eradication of fuel poverty."
